Week 13 Reading
Read Forming by David Takle P. 9-62
Discuss the concept of rowing vs. sailing. In your walk with Christ - when do you find it easier to sail and when do you end up rowing? What causes you to switch into rowing?
The problem is, we have lost the art of being mentored. P. 26 David Takle talks about what it means to be mentored by the Holy Spirit. Does this make sense to you? Was there anything new you picked up on related to this?
Another interesting problem that is presented in traditional discipleship models is that of trying to motivate people to do more in regard to their spiritual journey. The obvious question is, “Why bother? I’m going to heaven when I die. What difference does it make how much effort I make in the mean time?” P. 37 Based on what you’ve read, as well as what you’ve heard at Limitless and Rehoboth why is this statement flawed?
…It would be like saying that our connection to the Vine is dependent upon how much fruit we are producing, when in fact it is the other way around - our fruit is dependent upon how well we are connected to the Vine. So we end up with a great deal of confusion in regard to how this all works. If we find ourselves at some distance from God, how is it possible to perform well enough to get the relationship back, when we cannot truly do well unless we are already connected? So you see that if we misunderstand the nature of our relationship with God, we end up with a practical theology that makes little sense and turns the Christian life into a program of self-effort. P. 46-47 Discuss. How can we shift our focus from trying to perform for God to simply abiding in Him more deeply each day?
